Since the beginning of January, Comhlámh has been working with partners across the EU and in Myanmar, Peru and Togo as part of the ‘European Volunteering for You’ (EV4U) project.
Supported by the EU Aid Volunteers Initiative and led by La Guilde du Raid, the project will run until December 2018. The project represents an exciting opportunity to focus on improving sending and hosting organisations’ practice and procedures around engaging with volunteers in humanitarian work.
Through our involvement with both the technical assistance and capacity building aspects of the EU Aid Volunteers Initiative, we will be working to bridge the gaps between organisations specialised in humanitarian aid and those specialised in volunteer management. Our first consortium meeting took place in Paris in February, and offered the opportunity to learn about the specific issues and challenges around humanitarian volunteering in each partner country. We also participated in a three-day training event around health, safety and security issues for volunteers: Comhlámh staff member Charlotte Toner reflected on how
“this training gave each partner organisation a chance to get to know their security policies, learning how to develop a security training module with staff and volunteers and security regarding recruitment of volunteers. It was very insightful and a brilliant asset to all organisation partners involved”.
Over the coming months, we look forward to further training and learning around volunteer management and disaster risk management, preparedness response. We’ll be looking at ways of involving our Code of Good Practice signatories in benefitting from this unique opportunity: to learn more, please contact Aine (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Dervla (email@example.com)
