Brussels 2017

The first EU Aid Volunteers Network meeting and workshop was held in Brussels between Feb 13th and 14th.  Organised by DG ECHO, in conjunction with the EACEA, the event brought together organisations from around the world to discuss what has happened since the programme began and to look at possible developments for the future.  There were over 100 participants, and the event was a very significant occasion within the EUAVI’s development: it provided an opportunity for people who are active within the Initiative and organisations who are considering how they might get involved to meet each other and discuss their queries with peers and with the coordinating bodies.

Comhlámh was delighted to have the opportunity to showcase our work on two projects through co-facilitating workshops highlighting the capacity building and technical assistance projects with which we’re involved.  The technical assistance project, which is led by La Guilde, examined questions of how to build good relationships among partners within a consortium, based on our experiences of working with nine organisations from around the EU  For the capacity building project, we examined the key questions of how to coordinate EU Aid Volunteers with local volunteers’ dynamics and actions: this included inputs from our partners in France Volontaires (the project leaders), Red Cross Burundi, Action Aid Bangladesh and the Italian organisation, FOCSIV.

A number of Code signatories  – SUAS, Nurture Africa and VMM – were also present at the workshop, and we hope that more Irish-based VSAs will consider ways of becoming involved in the EUAVI over the coming months.  There will be an open information day about the Initiative on March 28th: this will take place in Brussels but will be livestreamed for anyone who’s interested.
