Kevin Murphy from Nuture Africa reports back from our Tell It On A Tuesday event last week.

What a wholly positive and energising evening it was! Tuesday 22nd July was the date of the first in a series of several public events, where returned overseas volunteers; both long and short-term, were invited to share their own unique and inspiring stories of their volunteering experience.

After several months of preparation by the Comhlámh Volunteering & Development Education Committee, ‘Tell it on Tuesday’ was transformed from an idea to reality!

The Comhlámh Volunteering & Development Education Committee, which is comprised of Volunteer Sending Agencies from Comhlámh’s Peer Support network, promotes Development Education within overseas volunteering and seeks to explore avenues in which to encourage and provide the space for the continuous engagement of overseas volunteers upon their return to Ireland.

Our first “Tell it on Tuesday” event, took place in the relaxed and informal setting of The Third Space in Smithfield, Dublin, witnessing four returned volunteers (each speaking for 10 minutes), recall favourite personal memories of their overseas volunteering experience, two stories about one memorable day in their time overseas; two stories about how the experience had impacted them on a personal level.

Each return volunteer shared very different, yet equally engrossing stories to the captivated audience. From the buzz over tea, coffee & lemonade afterwards, each person in attendance certainly benefitted from being present at this very special event. May it be the first of many!

On behalf of the Comhlámh Volunteering & Development Education Committee, I must sincerely thank Eithne Connolly, Belinda Brummer, Elaine Doyle and Orla McGrath for sharing their stories with those of us lucky enough to have been in attendance.
