Here’s a recording of last week’s edition of our regular #FirstWedsDebates in the Twisted Pepper.
As part of Fair Trade Fortnight, we delved into the relationship between trade and aid. The proposition we tabled asked “Is the Trade not Aid mantra a smokescreen for greater penetration of northern business into southern economies?”
It was a bit of a stellar line up and speakers included:
Dan O’Brien is Chief Economist of the Institute of International and European Affairs, one of Ireland’s leading think tanks. Conall O’Caoimh is founder and Director of Value Added in Africa. Alfredo Ortega is Vice-Chair of the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers’ Association (BSCFA). Peter Gaynor is the co-ordinator of Fairtrade Ireland. The moderator on the night was Dr Niamh Gaynor, political sociologist specialising in the politics of inequality and development.
Thanks to Kate for the photos.
