We are hosting our annual celebration of International Volunteer Day on December 5th in recognition of the contribution of overseas volunteers to global development. This year the focus will primarily be on celebrating the work accomplished by returned volunteers.

International Volunteer Day (IVD) is an international observance designated by the United Nations since 1985. It offers an opportunity for volunteer organizations and individual volunteers to make visible their contributions – at local, national and international levels – to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. We approximate that 4500 Irish people volunteered overseas in 2012. In line with our core values in Comhlámh, we believe that the greatest contribution that volunteers make to development is often on their return; inspiration from an overseas experience channelled into lifelong activism.

For the past three years we have been delivering a project for returned volunteers to help them identify their own pathways to activism. This IVD we will celebrate some of the inspiring work that has emerged from the project and bring together some of the key learning.

It’s all going to happen down at Culture Box, 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin between 4 and 6pm on December 5th.

Exhibitors and speakers on the day include:

Niall Crowley (former CEO of the Equality Authority)
Grainne O’Neill (Project Officer, Comhlámh – coordinator of continuous engagement work with returned volunteers)
Emily Price (Art Exhibition: Celebrate our She-roes)
Jorge Ruiz (Photo Exhibition: Mane na Joso)
Nahid Dabiri (Short stories project)
Sean O’Connell (returned volunteer and coordinator of the World’s Best News)

Why not give us a hand getting your volunteers along on the day?
